Sprung Structures

2022

In 2007 Sprung Structures moved its head office and manufacturing facilities to a multi-acre campus in Aldersyde, Alberta. Having outgrown several office and manufacturing facilities in Calgary, Sprung wanted to consolidate into one facility and create a showcase for what can be achieved with Sprung buildings. The 150,000 square foot (13,935 m2) Sprung Structure is equipped with two manufacturing wings and office space which features R30 plant-based insulation and an architectural membrane with special translucent panels in the peak which provides natural daylight. The center core of the facility includes a 30’ high glazing wall that provides breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains, a restaurant, gymnasium, indoor gardens, lounge, athletic center, and corporate offices. The two wings of the structure house state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities for aluminum and membrane fabrication.

Thanks to Sprung Structures air tightness and other energy efficiency features Sprung Structures ranks amongst the most energy efficient ways to built right off the factory floor.

Spearheaded by Dan Cloutier, Sprung’s desire was to demonstrate they could easily rank amongst the most energy efficient of all structures utilizing two system; combined heat and power (under 5 year payback) and solar PV.

The cogeneration system provides much of the space heating required year round and about 90% of the electricity needed when manufacturing is not taking place and about 50% during manufacturing working hours. Manufacturing mostly occurs during daylight hours and the solar PV panels provide about 45% of electricity needed about 2000 hours per year. In non-manufacturing hours the CHP and solar PV are net metered and provide a credit.

SAIT Green Building Technology audited and calculated the actual savings from the cogeneration system to Sprung from Sept 2020 to Aug 2021 to be $189,645. All savings are after equipment and installation costs have been covered.
